I had a very difficult experience the other night. I’ve been watching the cable news about the riots due to George Floyd’s horrific murder. I woke up in the middle of the night full of fear and anxiety. I started asking myself the hard questions. What if the looters come to my house? What should I do? Should I buy a gun to protect my wife and granddaughter? I pictured Fulton unable to run away from the mob. What could he do…nothing?
The fears have somewhat lingered, but still lay beneath the surface of my heart. I started meditating on a couple of verses that have helped me. Jesus told his disciples, “They ought always to pray and not lose heart.” Luke 18:1b There is a very strong link between prayer and a strong heart.
Another verse tells us, “Unless the LORD watches over the city, the guards stand watch in vain.” Psalm 127:1b God commands us to be courageous, “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9 Those are some powerful words.
Pray for me as I pray for you that God will provide the courage that will overcome our fears.
